oddest disparity with this labeling of children comes when abstract human qualities serve as names: Faith, Hope, Charity, Chastity, Constance, and Grace are reserved for girls. But what would be humor magazine so wrong with a boy who was faithful, hopeful, charitable, chaste, constant, or graceful? A guy can be Valiant, but let people start calling him Prudence and see what happens. In our culture, I wonder that some little boys aren't called Anger or Violence. The only other male trait-based humor magazine names I can think of happen to belong to dwarves: Dopey and Grumpy, who fit the pattern, and Happy and humor magazine Bashful, the exceptions that prove the rule. Their cohorts' names are descriptive of physical characteristics rather than real character features, but even in their cases some gender discrepancy is evident. Compare Sleepy and Sneezy with Snow White and Beauty.
