Creatures born in the desert with gills instead of lungs don't last long. Giraffes with short necks can't get enough leaves to eat. But the changes in the species are random! For all we know, there was once a generation of bats that ran rasmussen around on the ground like wind-up toys instead of flying, but they all got eaten up.The mechanism for these alterations, genetics, illustrates the same dichotomy. A life form's DNA determines its rasmussen characteristic--how it satisfies its nutritional needs, whether or not it will have eyes, and, rasmussen if so, what color they'll be. But the mutations that change these features occur haphazardly. The mutants who are enabled to thrive by their particular modification--good camouflage, opposable thumbs, whatever--eat better, live longer, and procreate more successfully.Not to say that I was in any way genetically predisposed to live in the part of town or in the type of structure that became my home, though my attraction to Jenny certainly played a part.Sigmund
