| We have already signalled above our concerns teaching sex education about the potential impact on gender equality of proposals for more teaching sex education and earlier vocational subjects within the school curriculum, particularly the risk that such changes could lead to more sex stereotyped curriculum choices and routeways for both girls and boys. The overt gender stereotyping and segregation within Modern Apprenticeships is an issue which is widely recognised and the table above shows how vocational choices at 14 are mirrored in choices of Modern Apprenticeships. Currently, statistics show that the majority of girls who enter vocational routeways which include Modern Apprenticeships, are disadvantaged and have poorer long term pay and progression prospects than boys embarking on similar routeways because of the vocational choices they make. |
