As a further FYI, Vancomycin is pretty much an antibiotic of last resort. It's like battery acid to theitalian job the body's veins and is theitalian job so toxic, ya don't use it if ya don't absolutely have to. It often erodes smaller veins in the body theitalian job that it's administered by so many nurses now will refuse to start an IV for Vancomycin in anything smaller than a PICC-line (peripherally inserted central catheter) or a central line (a line inserted on the chest directly into the superior vena cava). Anyhow, I digress. Bacteria resistant to such a strong drug are, well, you get the picture, frightening. VRE is not particularly dangerous to healthy adults as long as they take adequate precautions but is extremely dangerous in the elderly, children and adults with compromised immune systems. A gown must be worn along with gloves whenever you get near a patient that has it no matter what your health status. In my case, however, not only did I not know he had the bug, I have been sick with this asthma-cum-respiratory bullshit for over a week and have been on three separate corticosteroids to try and resolve it.
