They are the 304 adult prisoners life in Iowa life receiving full-time psychological treatment for their sex offenses. Their next stop is the Iowa Sex Offender Registry. During the 18 to 24 months they're at Mount Pleasant, offenders must own up to their crimes and, it is hoped, learn to change life the thoughts that lead them to offend in the first place. Often, they themselves were abused as children, though experts believe that may be less than a third of them, and must receive treatment for that. Building self-esteem is a key component. "These people reoffend or offend in the first place because they don't like themselves," said Mary Jensen, a treatment counselor at the prison. "If they don't feel good about themselves, they'll continue hurting someone." Iowa's worst offenders and those facing imminent release are given priority admittance.
