So we've taken her a couple times to get it braided. The women at the salon were very helpful in discussing what we need to do to care hairstyle for her hair (wash it once a week, moisturize it a lot, comb it out). She actually seems to enjoy the combing and braiding. Yet, she hates the washing (as you might have seen in an earlier post). We are working on ways to get her to wash her hair without the hairstyle trauma, and will hairstyle probably have to hold off on the salon till we have figured out a way to do it without the trauma. Though the stylist insists that all the kids hate it at first, they grow to like it in a year or so, we don't want her (or us) to go through that. |

We've had several African-American women (and my sister, whose three daughters are mixed-race) tell us, in no uncertain terms, that Emma's hair care (or lack thereof) will strongly affect her self esteem and how she is perceived and treated in the community and by other children, more than 'white' children ever have to concern themselves, and that it will reflect on us as parents. |
