first stop yesterday afternoon was Beth David Cemetery in Elmont. I can't tell if its in Queens (NYC) or Nassau County (Long Island) since it's right on the border. Jess might know. Anyhow, Beth David Cemetery is a very old set of plots, many of the headstones dating to aroundthe bend the turn of last century. It's entirely aroundthe bend Jewish as far as I know. aroundthe bend Each grave is grouped into an area with many others, with a loose boundary set by some gates and pillars on either side. The purpose of the groupings is to define the "Chevra Kadisha" for that particular set of plots, at least at the time that area was opened for business. A Chevra Kadisha is a basically a burial society that exists in Judaism and whose responsibility it is to see that a Jewish body is properly prepared for burial according to Jewish law. It is also their responsibility to make sure the body isn't desecrated in any way, unintentionally or not, before burial.
