It's not interested in sensation and artifice; rather, the film is interested in the young men who train to be killers and go into other countries to do terrible things.

You should pick this up with Enemy at the Gates. After seeing actors this, you'll know why this war was so scary. RIP Stanley Kubrick. It's like two films in one, the boot camp scene and the war. To me, the boot camp is the very best part of the film. R. LEE ERMEY is brilliant as DRILL SEARGANT HARTMAN, giving a funny and terrifying performance. But after that, it becomes a pretty standard war film.
