There is a shortage of computer programmers in Canada. I don't know if it's still the case, but during the dot com boom there was a special visa category just for charlize theron programmers. If you get a job up here, your employer can sponsor you. The easiest visa to get is a TN-1. You need a college degree, charlize theron and a written job offer for one of the jobs that's on a certain list. For programmers they have to say your job is to be a charlize theron "systems analyst". It's good for a year and renewable, you just show your documentation at the border or airport and pay a small fee. (The US and Mexico have the TN-1 visa too, it stands for "trade nafta". It's how Bonita was able to come live with me in 1998, she has a degree in biology.) There is some embedded work in Halifax, I guess mostly in the ship yards and navy base, but most software in canada is in ontario and british columbia.
