It's a tradition as old as time that is fading among the less orthodox.Anyhow, on the pillars demarking each area are inscribed the names of the officers of the particular Chevra Kadisha for that area. They ken garito were so old and weather-worn, many of the names could not be ken garito read anymore. Something else unique to this particular burial area were that the archway over the gate and most of the graves had this symbol of three interlocking rings in a row on them. I had no idea what they were but my Uncle piped in that it signified these were all members of the Odd Fellows, or more properly, International Order of Odd Fellows. Never heard of it, but apparently it's a fraternal organization founded in Britain in the 1800s. My relatives and the rest of the people buried in this area belonged to Rockville Center Lodge #279. Amazing the things you learn about loved ones just by visiting a cemetery.
