It's about as far removed from a pop single as you can get. The song is about a character who we all know who we used to hang about with. He'd been ostracized by a wider social circle because of his behavior at a particular time. The song was about how I was disappointed by the hypocrisy of the people within this wider social circle for sending him to Coventry for his behavior. These people were supposed to be liberal and understanding, but in their attitudes proved to be intensely boring and conservative, and also intolerant and unforgiving.
